It is that time of year when we have vacations planned, barbeques to attend, summer camps, pool parties and much more. It is hard for people to think about getting sick during the summer months, but even in hot weather illnesses are inevitable. Allied Medical Centers wants to make sure that you enjoy your summer months by giving you the tools and tips in order for you to stay healthy all summer long.
Daily SPF is Key - Every morning whether it is sunny or cloudy always apply sunscreen to at least your face and neck area if you will be running errands. If you will be in the sun for long periods of time, make sure and cover any part of your body that is being exposed to the sun. By simply taking an extra step, you will be sparing your skin from overexposure that could cause sunburns, wrinkling, premature aging or the worst outcome, skin cancer. When selecting your sunscreen there are specific kinds for all skin types including mineral, water-resistant, sticks, sprays and built-in sunscreens found in lotions, foundations, lipsticks and more.
If in doubt go ahead and lather the sunscreen of your choice on and don’t let the summer sun turn into your worst nightmare.
Keep Hydrated - Whether you are at the pool, playing sports, at a picnic or traveling, it is crucial that you keep hydrated at all times. Since water makes up more than half of your body weight, you need to give your body what it deserves. Water is obviously the best choice and even sports drinks will work if you need some electrolytes, however it is important to stay away from caffeine, soda and alcohol, as they will actually dehydrate you. It is important to listen to your body and if you are not sweating, feeling light headed or have chills, you may be dehydrated and be suffering from a heat stroke. Remember more is better in this scenario!
Summer Allergies - Unfortunately, allergies are year round for a lot of people and summer allergies can be just as bad as spring and fall allergies. The most common allergy culprits are pollen, mold and insect stings/bites. Be aware of sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, runny noses and dark circles under the eyes as these are all symptoms associated with allergies. If you are already an allergy sufferer, use what works for you, if not, it is important to discuss your options with a doctor so you can be treated. Remember, if at any time you are unable to breathe go directly to an emergency room, you may be suffering from a large allergic reaction and time is NOT on your side.
Critters Causing Problems - Ticks and mosquitos and fleas! Oh my! It is important to protect yourself from these small insects that can cause a wide range of problems. Spraying lawns and outdoor areas that are used often with repellants, emptying standing water and staying out of wooded areas are all things you can do for prevention. When camping or spending a lot of time outside, make sure and put a topical or spray on that repels these nuisances. Not only can they cause welts and itching, they also can carry diseases, such as West Nile, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Lyme Disease, Zika Virus and more depending on where you travel. Always be cautious and check your body regularly for any unwanted visitors.
These are just a few items you need to watch out for during the summer months in order to have a happy and healthy summer vacation. If for any reason you need to see a doctor for one of the above items, please call our clinic at 405.603.1175 and we can help you with your next steps to recovery.
